COMING OR GOING 0

July 18th, 2011

With the lockout almost over, according to league sources, I figured I would start to look at what the 2011-2012 Oakland Raiders might look like.  With the rules of the new collective bargaining agreement still unknown it is still unclear exactly which players will be available.  That being said, here is an attempt to try to figure out what could/should happen.

Most people would think Nnamdi Asomougha is our most important free agent to hold on to, but I believe Zach Miller is more important.  Zach Miller is a much needed weapon for the offense.  The money it would cost to keep Asomougha could be spent on other players that could help the team.  Jonathan Joseph or even Carlos Rogers could be added to help out the secondary.  Even as great as Nnamdi is he might prove to be far to expensive, even for Al Davis.  Another member of the secondary that will most likely be gone is Michael Huff.  I believe he will want more than he is worth and it wouldn’t bother me if he is gone.  Michael Mitchell, Tyvon Branch, and Stevie Brown can do just fine without him.  Michael Bush is a player that could really go either way.  I like the tandem of Bush and McFadden but I wouldn’t be surprised if Bush went somewhere else to be more of a feature back.  If he does go there is a long list of potential free agents at RB that could fill the void.  It is time to cut ties with Mario Henderson and Cooper Carlisle on the OL.  Robert Gallery will most likely follow Tom Cable to Seattle leaving Jared Veldheer and rookie Stefen Wisniewski to anchor the “bully” that coach Hue Jackson wants to have on offense.  Daniel Loper played well when Gallery was injured and look for Bruce Campbell and rookie Joseph Barksdale to also compete for playing time.  There are some big names available at WR and as much as Raiders fans would like some of these guys, I don’t believe they will spend much money there.  Although it would be nice to add a veteran WR like Santana Moss, who is familiar with Jason Campbell, and shouldn’t cost as much as Sidney Rice or Santonio Holmes.  I don’t expect much to change on the DL. Richard Seymour,Lamarr Houston, Tommie Kelly, and Matt Shaughnessy, enough said.  It would be smart to add to the LB corps to try to improve the run defense which again was horrible last year.  Look for Rolando McClain to step his game up in his second year and Kamerion Wimbley showed he is an excellent pass rusher, but they could still use some help.

With the free agency frenzy just a couple of days away(fingers crossed) we will see how all of these things shake out.  One thing is for certain though, I am ready for some Raider football.

POSITION REVIEW: LB 0

January 26th, 2011

The Oakland Raiders 2010-11 starting LB corps was comprised of 3 players new to the team. Led by rookie MLB Rolando McClain who didn’t dominate in his first year but showed that he will develop into one of the best MLB in the league. He racked up 85 total tackles and had 6 tackles for a loss. His impact goes beyond the numbers as was the case against Jacksonville when he was injured and the defense got run all over. Backups Ricky Brown and other rookie Travis Goethal could not handle the job that game.

The OLB were Kamerion Wimbley, acquired from Cleveland and Quentin Groves from Jacksonville. Wimbley played well and was effective in pass rushing coming up with 9 sacks. Groves did well but still has a lot of room for improvement. Backup Thomas Howard is a free agent who I believe the Raiders should try to resign. He shouldn’t cost a lot of money and he can give you quality play as a reserve.

The future of this group looks bright. McClain seemed to improve every game and will be a much better player in his second year. Wimbley and Groves are also both young players who are still getting better. Whoever becomes the Raiders DC will have some LB who can pressure the QB and stop the run.

POSITION REVIEW: DL 0

January 23rd, 2011

The play of the DL helped to bring the swagger back to the Oakland Raiders. Led by veteran Richard Seymour this group helped the Raiders defense achieve the 2nd most sacks in the league in the 2010-11 season. The DL caused havoc in the other teams backfield all season long. Seymour had 5.5 sacks and 6 tackles for a loss while Tommy Kelly chipped in 7 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss. Matt Shaughnessy the 2nd year DE was explosive at times and racked up 7 sacks and 5 tackles for a loss while rookie Lamarr Houston had 5 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss. Although the Raiders still have trouble stopping the run, this group up front is solid and with its youth should remain intact for a while.

Richard Seymour is a key free agent but if the Raiders can’t retain him they still have a lot of  strength up front. Lamarr Houston can play either DE or DT and showed this season that he is a scrappy player with a motor that doesn’t quit. With DL coach Mike Waufle likely to return, or be DC, players like Houston, Shaughnessy, and Trevor Scott should continue to develop and dominate. The DL is the anchor of the Raiders defense and they really set the tone for the team.

POSITION REVIEW: WR/TE 0

January 21st, 2011

In the 2010-11 season , the Oakland Raiders were led in receiving by TE Zach Miller. Miller had 685 yards along with 5 TD.  Miller has been the Raiders leading receiver for the past 3 seasons. WR Louis Murphy was 2nd on the team with 609 yards but only added 2 TD. Murphy looked very bright as a rookie but hasn’t really gotten to the next level yet. He also missed 2 games due to injury but i look for him to be a major contributor next year. Another major factor was the play of rookie WR Jacoby Ford. He was the fastest player at the combine so it is no surprise he was drafted by the Raiders. Ford didn’t make his impact on the team until week 7 against K.C. He is now a triple threat, meaning he can score by pass reception, kickoff return, or on an end-around hand off. He is  a dynamic player who will be a playmaker for the Raiders for many years. Second year WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (DHB) continues to struggle with catching the ball. Although DHB looked good against Seattle, it was his only notable performance. WR Chaz Schilens was once again hampered by injuries. When Schilens is healthy he looks like a very talented WR threat but he has only played 13 out of the last 32 games.

Looking forward Zach Miller is a free agent and must be resigned. Murphy and Ford look to be legitimate weapons and if Schilens stays healthy he can be a good one too. DHB and the other receivers should benefit from having Hue Jackson and Al Saunders as coaches. If they can coach up the young talent the Raiders could have one of the most explosive WR corps in the league.

As of right now rumor has it that Chad Ochocinco would like to reunite with former coach Hue Jackson. Chad has been a productive receiver in the NFL and as long as he brings the right attitude he could bring more firepower to the passing game. He is still under contract so we will see what happens but like I said, the coaching is in place to take the WR to the next level. Look for Jason Campbell to use all of these players to make big plays throughout the year.
